Nurture Group

The Nurture Group was established in September 2023, where from transition information it was clear that there was a small number of children that were not ready for a full transition to secondary school.

Due to the academic and social needs of specific students, Hassenbrook Academy thought it was in the students interest to be able to provide a group where identified pupils could therefore access the curriculum in more of an adaptive and creative approach.

The SEND department at Hassenbrook Academy go through a process of identifying students with SEND needs that may require more support educationally through the transition process of primary to secondary. We aim to provide a consistent and supportive environment for students to be able to become more confident learners within English Maths and Science.

Students in the Nurture Group follow the same curriculum as the rest of their peers but in a way that is adapted to their learning styles to ensure a fair education for all. Staff in the Nurture Group regularly monitor and assess the students academic progress. Once it is deemed that a student is ready to transition to mainstream, a fully supported plan is created to successfully support students back into their mainstream education with their peers.

Within these sessions, students also have the opportunity to be able to access support from SEND staff and also find strategies that can help students regulate and develop their independence. The Nurture Group provides students with a supportive and differentiated approach to the core curriculum which provides students with the confidence and belief that they can access mainstream education.

We strongly encourage our students to step out of their comfort zone and apply their learning to real life situations which is key for students to have an idea of how the curriculum relates to the wider world.
